New Public Works Facility

In 2016, the City of Crest Hill began discussions of the possibility of constructing a new Public Works Facility. Over the next few years, the City of Crest Hill visited many other municipalities' Public Works facilities, conducted a feasibility and space-needs study, researched a building location site, and reviewed several design options as a design-build concept through an architectural firm. In carefully considering all of our options to be fiscally responsible and choose the most cost effective option in regards to long term viability for all of our employees and residents, we realized that we could save a tremendous amount of money by naming the City of Crest Hill as General Contractor for this project. City Council approved Kirk Wilkins, our Building Commissioner and life-long contractor, as our General Contractor for the Public Works Facility. Kirk was assisted by Nick Narducci from the Financial aspect and Brian Semplinski from the Building Manager aspect.

By taking our time, gathering all pertinent information, and exploring all of our options to be fiscally responsible, City Council agreed to build a new Public Works facility on City owned property located at 2090 Oakland Avenue. On May 30, 2019, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on this site to begin construction of a new 40,000 sq. ft. modern facility that will be a tremendous benefit to our residents and our employees for years to come. We also will be able to house all of our vehicles and equipment indoors which will certainly extend the life of our equipment. Due to careful financial planning, this facility was built without any tax increases to our residents and by completing the project with the City as General Contractor, saved the residents $4.5 million from the original architectural price as a design-build.

In July of 2020, we began transferring our equipment and personnel into our new Public Works Facility located at 2090 Oakland Avenue. Unfortunately, due to the restrictions placed on us by COVID-19, we had to postpone our Grand Opening of this facility until, hopefully, the spring or summer of 2021. I am certainly proud of our new Public Works Facility and I am forever grateful for all of the hard work by City Staff to complete this project. This facility will certainly improve the safety, health, and welfare of all of our employees and I hope that our residents are also proud of this new facility.
